How the process runs for a visitor

A remote conversation first, usually by video or by email, to establish whether treatment is plausible and what to send ahead. Then an assessment in person, which includes tomography of the cornea, thickness measurements, a refraction and an examination of the ocular surface. Then the procedure, often on a separate day. Then at least one check before the flight, with the remaining checks arranged for home.

The clinic will tell you which of those can be combined for your eyes. The answer depends on the findings rather than on the timetable you would prefer, so it is worth asking before the flights are booked rather than after.

Why contact lenses matter before you fly

A contact lens holds the cornea in a slightly different shape for a period after it comes out, so measurements taken too soon describe the wrong eye. Soft lenses are usually left out for a period beforehand and rigid lenses for longer, and the interval is the clinic instruction rather than a general rule.

This is the single most common reason an assessment booked for the day after arrival has to be moved, and the reason the itinerary is worth building around it.

What to settle before booking flights

The things that go wrong on a treatment trip are usually administrative rather than clinical, and all of them are preventable by email in advance.

• Which surgeon will operate, and whether the licence covers the procedure
• Which laser is installed on site, rather than which is available on request
• What the written quote includes and what is charged separately
• How many checks are included, and where they can happen afterwards
• What the clinic does if the measurements point to a different procedure
• Who is contacted if something needs attention after you fly home

How long the visit needs to be

A short visit is usually a matter of days rather than weeks, but the number depends on the interval the cornea needs and on how quickly the first check can be scheduled. Both are questions for the clinic, and both are cheaper to ask than to discover.

Where the timing does not work, the standard alternative is to be assessed on one visit and treated on the next. It costs a second flight and removes the risk of arriving for an operation the measurements do not support.

Follow-up once you are home

This is the part most often left vague, and the part worth writing down. Which checks are included, whether a clinician near home can carry them out, who holds the records, and what happens if something needs looking at between appointments are four questions that a clinic can answer concretely before you travel.

A clinic that answers them without hesitation has thought about international patients before you arrived. One that has not, has not.
