The procedures, side by side

LASIK and Femto LASIK lift a thin flap and reshape the tissue beneath it with an excimer laser. PRK and TransPRK remove the surface layer instead, which takes longer to settle and suits some corneas better. SMILE and SMILE Pro shape a lenticule inside the cornea and remove it through a small incision, with no flap at all.

Where a prescription is beyond what laser correction can address, or the cornea is not suitable, a lens-based option such as an implantable lens or lens replacement may be discussed instead. That is a different category of surgery with a different risk profile, not a fallback version of the same thing.

How the choice is actually reached

Four measurements do most of the work: corneal thickness, the shape of the whole surface, the refraction, and how dry the eye is. A thin or irregular cornea points away from flap procedures, a very high prescription may point away from laser treatment altogether, and a refraction that is still changing is a reason to wait rather than to choose.

The process, from enquiry to follow-up

The sequence is usually an assessment, a decision, a procedure day, and then a small number of scheduled checks. In Dubai the assessment and the procedure are often close together, which is convenient, though worth planning deliberately: contact lenses have to come out beforehand, and the cornea should be measured in its own time rather than after a hurried stop.

What the price depends on

Variation between Dubai clinics comes from the platform used, whether the surgeon who assessed you is the one who operates, how thorough the assessment is, and what the quote includes. The inclusions are the part worth reading twice: medication, follow-up visits and any further treatment are the usual exclusions, and a smaller number with more exclusions is not a smaller cost.

The local picture

Facilities are licensed at two levels, the facility and the individual practitioner, and in Dubai both are recorded with the Dubai Health Authority. The emirate holds the largest concentration of refractive surgery in the country, which makes choosing the local difficulty rather than getting seen at all.
